Background

The mission of the Human Development Report Office (HDRO) is to advance human development with the goal to contribute to the expansion of opportunities, choices and freedoms. HDRO works towards this goal by promoting new ideas, advocating practical policy changes, and constructively challenging policies and approaches that constrain human development. HDRO works with others to achieve change through writing and research, data analysis and presentation, and outreach and advocacy work.
The objective of this internship is to provide the intern with the opportunity to learn about the Human Development approach and current international development issues; by working on design updates of HDRO’s high-traffic public website, database content updates, and data visualizations.

Duties and Responsibilities

Intern will be supervised by the Web and Production Manager and s/he is expected to deliver the following tasks:
  • Create wireframes, storyboards, prototypes, user flows, process flows and site maps to effectively communicate interaction and design ideas;
  • Help design web-based interfaces in HTML/CSS and JavaScript;
  • Analyze user interface and navigation and create on-brand design solutions, including drop-down lists, navigation components, user response messages, etc.;
  • Design smaller and larger web artwork (banners, infographics, forms, maps);
  • Contribute to updating the design/visual guidelines and best practices in cooperation with the Web Analyst;
  • Conduct user tests with focus on usability;
  • Prepare Google Analytics reports and perform SEO optimization;
  • Perform ad hoc duties as required;

Required Skills and Experience

Education:
  • Currently enrolled in a Master’s or Ph.D. Program in computer science, web design or related field
Experience:
  • Demonstrated knowledge of HTML 5, CSS, JavaScript, JQuery and Bootstrap or equivalent framework;
  • Good understanding of usability and responsive design best practices;
  • Ability to apply in object oriented programming techniques and advanced search algorithms.
  • Strong creative, analytical abilities, and interpersonal skills;
  • Experience in writing test cases, performing unit testing and regression testing;
  • Ability to identify cross browser/platform compatibility issues.
  • Strong understanding/knowledge in Drupal is an asset
  • Good knowledge of Adobe CC Photoshop/Illustrator;
Language:
  • Fluent in English.
Note:
UNDP only accepts interns for a minimum of 6 weeks and a maximum of 6 months.
UNDP does not pay for internships. Interns are not financially remunerated by UNDP. The costs associated with the latter must be borne by the nominating institution, related institution or government, which may provide the required financial assistance to its students; or by the student, who will have to obtain financing for subsistence and make his or her own arrangements for travel, accommodation, etc.
Proof of medical insurance valid for the location in which the internship will be carried out (i.e. New York, USA).
There is no expectation of employment with UNDP following an internship.
